It is planned that the 2012 Clan Gathering will take place in the Fife / Dundee area including a visit to Birkhill on Saturday 9 June 2010 (NB THIS IS THE SECOND WEEKEND IN JUNE). Further details will be discussed at the Council meeting on 31 October and will be included in the Skirmisher (and this information will be updated). Do join us - email the secretary on - secretary "at" scrimgeourclan.org.uk General Information and Brief HistoryClan Name:Most members of the Clan spell their name as above, but in many cases (including the Chief, the Earl of Dundee) it is spelt with a 'y'. Other forms (e.g. Scrimjer. Scrim) are known, but unusual. The names Scrimshire & Scrimshaw, found in England are possibly of different origin. (For more information on Skrymshers etc see http://members.shaw.ca/skrymsher/ for more on Scrimshaw etc see www.gumnut.net/scrimshaw ). Pronounciation?Following the publication of the latest Harry Potter book - "... the Half-Blood Prince", which includes a new Minister of Magic called Scrimgeour, we have received a number of requests for help with pronounciation (and the search log for the website records similar requests). We're not great on phonetics, but suggest "SCRIMJER" (syllables are Scrim Jer). It's fun to have our name in such a popular book. It's also fun that a scottish author (who lives 3 miles from us) is so popular. We hope that you enjoy the book. |
