WORLD WIDE WEB EDITORIAL

Introduction

During the past 12 months, free (except for the cost of phone calls) Internet access has exploded in the UK. With this explosion came the opportunity to create web sites. Yours truly decided to put some of the Scrimgeour information onto such a site, with the result that there is now a considerable amount available online.

The address of the website is currently http://www.scrimgeour-edin.freeserve.co.uk. The intention is to try to get the address http://www.scrimgeourclan.org.uk for the website, but this is not yet in place.

Information on this site includes:

Between 8 May 1999 and 14 November 1999 the site was visited 627 times. The list of email contacts now numbers 24 individuals.

Summary of email correspondence

Since the site was set up I have received a number of messages from visitors; a summary is given below. (Some of these items actually arose from the "web board" at www.electricscotland.com).

Duncan Scrymgeour, Los Angeles, California, USA (el_guerrolatino.com) asked whether Scrymgeours wore other plaids as the blues and oranges of the tartan had a rather 70's feel…perhaps the designers had marmalade in mind. I suggested that the tartan is less lurid "in the cloth", that you do become more acclimatised to it and that it is rather distinctive.

Wallace Tudhope, (ctudhopeaol.com) asked where the name Dudhope comes from? I replied that (from our Scots dictionary) "Dud" means a hare and "Hope" a haven or bay.

Marcus Scrimgeour, a Canadian living in New York State, USA (mscrimgebestweb.net), says that his family has received the Skirmisher in the past.

Neil Scrimgeour, Queensland, Australia, (nhscrimtpgi.com.au), knew a little of the history and found the site interesting.

Alistair Scrimgeour, Wellington, New Zealand (al_scrimgeouryahoo.com) is not a member of the Clan Association, but has heard of it and is interested in joining.

Mike Scrimgeour, Ottawa, Canada (scrimgeourcompmore.net) - son of overseas editor Jack, who has agreed to be Jack's mailbox on the Internet!

Kevin Scrimgeour, Port Hope, Ontario, Canada (jokazeagle.ca) says that he learned a lot of things about his ancestors that he didn't previously know.

Patricia Finnerty, S Royalton, Vermont, USA (finnertysocer.net) writes that her grandmother was a Mary Catherine Scrymgeour, born March 17, 1887 to Harry Scrymgeour and Amy Mason in Dalkeith, Scotland. They came to the USA around the turn of the century and settled in Massachusetts.

Gordon W Farrell, Chatham, Virginia, USA (litebrgamewood.net) writes that his maternal grandfather was Collin Wallace Scrymgeour and asks whether there is a local Scrymgeour group or one in North America?

Kyle Scrimgeour, Los Angeles, California, USA (kyle_scrimgeourbazaarinc.com) says that he enjoyed the web-site and found information that he was unaware of, and also that he is "somewhat enticed" to purchase a kilt.

So who does what?

I don't see the web-site as upsetting the existing arrangements, John is Secretary, Catriona edits the Skirmisher in the UK and Jack in Canada (all are contactable by email - see Correspondence Addresses on page 3). I will maintain the web-site, publishing the Skirmisher online and adding to the email and "links" list pages when requests come in. If you wish to drop me a line with feedback on the web-site itself or want to correspond with me - that's fine too.
